I think you should first get rid of your watermarks. i know you’re trying to protect your images and all. but watermarks greatly reduce the quality and much more importantly the perception of your work.
As for the images, I’m just going to say something about your light. It doesn’t seem very evenly lit. perhaps it’s your modifier. i’m not sure. but your lighting is something i think you should look into.
genchi_ yeah your right…. the crop is between square and 35mm(2:3)…….. its 11×14 inches
why? because its the “fashion industry” standard crop ratio (i didn’t just randomly select a size)…. i think its because of the layout of some magazines… not really sure
but its widely accepted across the world as the standard size.
one thing though, you should learn to compose the subject better in the frame. instead of just focusing bang in the centre.
you could always just crop after as well, but i think its best if you compose in the viewfinder first. cropping is a nasty habit!
i have no idea what you want from photography, if you’re just doing this for fun having a laugh and stuff. but if perhaps you want to be a fashion photographer, you don’t need to pay for models.
i was using 3 lights. 1 softbox (2×3 i think) to my right and a beauty dish to the left, high. back light is just barn doors, and its placed basically where it looks like its coming from.
processing, so simple. just used curves a bit.
First priority should be glass. Thats the L range for canon. Landscapes: you would want the 14mm 2.8L, 24mm 1.4L or the 35mm 1.4L.
They’re the lenses that would basically separate your photos from the rest, given that you’re competent enough to use them…not saying your not.
The problem with the 7D, isn’t really quality. But it’s the crop factor, the 14mm turns into a 22mm, 24mm into 38mm and the 35mm into a shocking 56mm.
So if you’re really into landscape, you should get the fullframe 5DMK2 to really take advantage of those lenses and get really wide.
What camera do you have now btw?
not bad for first attempt. its really blown out on the left side of his face though.
the perspective is a bit off as well, he looks kinda short. and like he’s leaning towards the camera too. doesn’t settle right with my eyes, but then again their my eyes.
I think you should crop out your son in the first one….. sorry. Just leave your daughter blending into the background. Basically just cut it in half. The fact that you actually have to look to see your daughter makes it a bit more interesting. And extremely unique!
I just quickly cropped it myself and can’t really believe how good it is. There’s actually quite a lot of emotion and feeling with the photo on your daughters side. I think you should really try it at least.
The first one, the models right arm is weird looking, you should photoshop that. Liquify tool should do the job.
Second one just seems slightly out of focus.
I don’t really like white backgrounds either, personal thing. I always work with one though, but never fill it. A neutral grey or beige is much easier on the eyes and makes the subject pop a bit more. You should try it sometime. keep the model a few feet from the background and just point the lights at her.
Good job overall though.
If you don’t mind me asking what lenses did you use on this? And what lights do you have?
you just really have to stop with the post processing of the photograph. leave out the border, the blur around the edges and your name. keep it black and white though. it would be a lot stronger without those things.
i got a 5d mk2 and the 85mm 1.2L II lens. and its an extremely strong combination. the quality of the 85mm 1.2 is amazing, there’s literally nothing better in that range. so sharp at 1.2 and if you stop it down to f/4 or f/8, its not even funny how much detail you can see. if you want/need a 85mm, get the 1.2L version. you won’t regret it, don’t think anyone ever has.
the 5d mk2 is pretty damn good as well, its a solid camera. its slower the the 40d though. and if you shoot RAW, you better have a fast computer with lots of hard disk space. 20-30MB per shot.
bad thing about this combination of the 5dmk2 and 85mm1.2L is the god damn weight. i have a battery grip too, which doesn’t help. 5dmk2 weighs in at 895g(body only) and the 85mm 1.2 weighs 1025g. its around 2kg all together. very heavy. and another thing, it might be great shooting at 1.2 cause you get the best bokeh ever, but the focus plane is like 1-2cm.
you need to have it on auto focus anything beyond f/2.8. i say that because your viewfinder on any canon doesn’t let in more light then f/2.8. so say if you’re at f/1.2 and you think its in focus, it can still be off. you have to be very careful shooting at f/1.2.
anyways, all in all, if you want or need the best then there’s no better combination. 85mm 1.2L will be great on any camera body, but if you want it to shine, stick it on the 5d mk2. and putting a 85mm 1.2L on a cropped sensor, you get less bokeh!
I have shots with the horizon in the centre too. Just like this one the most, cause it has that “dark brooding” at the bottom. I think it adds to the dramatic nature of the photo.
