Wouldn’t they be the Aurora Australis then Alan?…

Anyway, at least I’ll be sitting pretty in the knowledge that I will still be able to find my way around, having never worked out the need for Sat Nav in a country that only has about 10 major roads.

Funnily enough I wouldn’t be averse to a switch the the other side… although my credit card would be.

interesting Dave… so probably a fault with the 40D metering, although your problem sounds a bit more continuous, whereas mine tends to be more random. Are you able to dial in a 2 stop exposure compensation and then shoot as per normal?

Not sure whether to post here or in the new lounge thread… however 2 suggestions.

Firstly I should state that I have no issue with GC/Lounge, and in general find it entertaining. Sometimes I struggle to do much photography for longish periods…. The fun in GC is generally what brings me back here during those periods.

However I appreciate the vibe that sometimes it can take over. So, back to my two suggestions.

    1. Move ‘The Lounge’ to the bottom of the list of forums. I realise that many people will use the ‘posts since last visit’, but for those that don’t then at least they have to pass some relevant photography topics to get to General chat.

    2. Getting technical now… Perhaps use some kind of credit system, where you gain credits by posting in Photography sections and can spend them by posting in GC. Wouldn’t be a problem to most people in GC as they are very active in most areas of the forum… but would prevent the occaisional excessive posting here and make sure that people balance their efforts.

very good John.. looks like you have this bird photography nailed.

Been a very quiet start to the feeding season in my back garden this year.. hoping it picks up as things get a bit colder.

Thanks Mark.. yes, well spotted they are windmills – there is a windfarm about a mile out to sea. Nothing wrong with your eysight then!

To balance the exposure I used a 3 stop ND graduated filter which I positioned diagonally to align with the sea/beach transition. It is supposed to be a ‘hard grad’ however the lightening of the blue sky in the top right corner suggests it’s not as hard as I anticipated.

Yes the dark patch of beach is a bit off-putting. I believe it is the tide mark, but it does look a bit grotty when compared to the lovely sand higher up the beach.

Thanks miki g.. I did think of the linear polarizer issue myself but it is definately a circular polarizer. My conclusion is also a faulty metering system, which seems to be intermitent. Additional filters (ND grads) don’t help the issue, but the polarizer seems to be the key element in all this. As I say I’m not too bothered as I can rectify the situation when it does occur by using manual exposure settings .. just wondered if anyone else was having similar issues.

Theres a lot to like here Helen. Good light, lovely colours in the sea, a bit of sunlight reflecting off the surface, waves rolling in, good exposure and composition. It’s one of those images that I’d like to be there for. The ‘I love you’ think it gives a strong focal point so can’t complain to much.

Only question is what are those 2 doing down there on the edge of the frame… and are they linked to the story you are telling? They appear to be literally ‘navel gazing’. I cannot work out if they are the happy couple or a random couple of blokes and hence they are a distraction. Had they been embracing or holding hands or something it would have made a nice link.however as they are I think thay are superflous to the image.

Apart from that – very nice.

This one was from the PI trip .. I liked it in other thread, but there were far too many images there to comment on.

I’m in a shallow dof phase these days so it’s right up my street. It’s unconventional from a composition perspective, but it works. Maybe could do with a bit more sharpening, but apart from that I like it… Have you tried a mono conversion… may work also.

Beautiful image John. Wonderful light on the boat and the mist helps with the feel.

I made it out myself also this morning… but am a bit slower in getting things processed… maybe next week sometime.

plenty to keep the budding photographer happy.. hope you have an understanding wife as it will be very difficult to put the camera down, and you’ll be making photo stops every mile or so. Agree with wonka on the road south to leenan, killary harbour and beyond. try nipping up to delphi, stop off at aasleagh falls, then on towards clifden if you get time.

….you’re gonna need some more memory cards.

Agree with Martin that 2 & 3 are the better of the bunch. I think that 2 may work better as a portrait crop – removing the framing walls? #1 doesn’t quite work for me either as it doesn’t feel balanced. I wonder whether putting the chair dead centre may have helped.. maybe not as the large picture on the right will always dominate?

Thanks for posting the original Jenny… so this HDR thing makes a real difference then!
