Shooting into the sun is ideal that way you can set your exposure on the shadow.
You can see that the closer you subject is to the camera, the more out of focus the background is. Ideally you can wait for the subjects to come closer to you – but the closer they get the harder it can be for capture the subjects in the frame.
The third one is much better in terms of exposure and framing. In the last one try cropping in tighter (right in).

Obviously the further the subject is away from you and depending how much you crop can affect the quality of the image.
At the start it took me a long time to realise that what I thought was a good image was only an ok image and this resulted in my sports coming on slower than it should have.
Best thing do is put up two images of what you think is a good image and what you think is a bad image and others can explain why they agree or disagree.
As Peter said above, it is better if you get the facial expressions but there are times that you have to use what you have and in that case try to concentrate on the face of the players around whoever is in possession.
In terms of cropping generally fill the frame with everything you want in the picture. Decide what is best to leave in and what to leave out and it will make your cropping a lot better.
It is great if you have a nice background but in a county ground, championship 1st round they place will look empty and horrible so I wouldn’t worry about it.
Concentrate on the framing and cropping first, that would be my advice at least
Its neither an M3 or M5. Its a 3 series – definitely a 325i but whether its a sport edition or not I couldn’t be sure.
It does have a tech 2 kit and the light wipers so it does look like a sport but the M badge on the front of mack means nothing – you can buy them for peanuts and stick them on…
Thanks for that folks. All points that I understand, but not necessarily used to practicing them!! Thought it might be that the camera can’t pick up everyone in the frame. I’m working with an 580 EXII so I didn’t really expect to have the problem with the flash…
Have to point out that it’s usually the closest subject in the frame that is not the sharpest – so obviously the closer to the camera the subject is the more obvious any sideways movement will be.
Thanks for the feedback,
Colm
I agree, nice pic – drops on the heart of the rose are lovely.
Don’t think the background is distracting at all – adds a sense that there is more than just the head of the rose there.
