Just seen the post and for anyones info there is a camera club, South Kildare, based in Newbridge. They meet every Thursday in the Parish Centre although I think they are out and about for the summer. Thanks for the comments, I was using a Canon 7D so it was a case of guess the framing, but at 15mm not too difficult. The other advantage is that you can shoot without actually looking at the subject and the normal street noise hides the shutter speed.
I have occasional twinges of guilt about being sneaky but they usually pass quickly!
Prints OK from DPP so I am not sure what is going on. Must be in the settings with Photoshop. Have tried using the generic Epson 1290 profile and it is much better though still not perfect. I have no idea why the specific profile should be so bad.
Another option is Sigma 80 400 APO with image stabilization. A good lens and you can handhold, with good technique, at fairly low shutter speeds.
See this handheld at 1/100 at around 350mm
If 3 people really like an image and 97 don’t, is the image good or bad?
Should the photographer continue to appeal to those 3 people, or change his way of shooting to appeal to the other 97?
If its my image and I like it then the image has to be good because in the end its really me I am trying to please with most of my pictures.
OK for competition stuff then I can occasionally take something that I might not really like but that I know will appeal to the judges. But I don’t see that as any different to a pro on an assignment. (only not as good!!)
In the end I think its really about pleasing yourself and if you can take on board stuff people say and it improves your work, in your eyes, then that’s what good criticism should be about
So, does this feedback make me, or you a “better photographer”
Only if its constructive, on too many sites all the feedback you ever get is how “Great” or “Really Nice” your pictures are. Cant see how that kind of feedback helps anybody.
What is good is people telling you WHY they like/dislike your pictures and I have to say you do get more of that on this forum than most others.
The other, most obvious, thing is you have to take this on board and actually make the changes and if I could only do that I’d be a great photographer!!!!
The Sigma 10-20, along with all short focus lenses has fairly noticeable barrel distortion at the wide end. However the raw converter DXo fixes this so what you get with the combination of hardware and software is an optically perfect lens!!
One thing to note is that WD 40 is not a lubricant. The WD stands for “Water Dispersant” which is what it is.
It would probably be better to use a silicone spray lubricant
PhotoBucket.com is another really good site. It gives you the links for Email & IM HTML IMG & Direct Link automatically for each uploaded picture.
Makes it dead easy to embed images just copy and paste the image tag
