The empty space at the top does nothing for me. I like the pose and lighting though. Messing about on my own (not going to post it, since you have your profile marked to no editing), doing a curves adjustment with the Linear Contrast setting in CS3 and -30 in Saturation gives it a nice dead feeling, but I dunno if that’s what you’re looking for or not.
Great shot…how did you process this one? Thought there might be some diffuse glow there but now that I look again I’m not so sure…
Processing is some Imagenomic Portraiture for skin texture (although not very much, she has AMAZING skin). Smart Sharpen in Photoshop CS3, contrast and exposure tweaks. The lighting in the park was particularly cool that day – snow underfoot, reflected light off some windows behind me, light coming in from everywhere! Gave a very cool glowing effect.
Not sure what I think about the B&W conversion, personally (it feels a bit heavy on the greys)… But aside from that, I absolutely love everything about this shot – the DOF, the framing and the subject are all fantastic.
It is best to use maunual as much as possible, especially when starting out.
I disagree with this, personally – IMO it’s much better to use either shutter priority or aperture priority as opposed to full manual. This way, you still have the control to get the effect you want, but the camera helps out with exposure. Far fewer ruined shots, and you still have the ability to learn.
As for the shots? You’re off to a great start! The best way to get better is just to keep on shooting! I need to remember this, personally. I haven’t been out shooting in AGES. But then, perhaps I’ve been distracted, what with the whole “moving out of the country and doing a 6 week whirlwind trip at the same time” thing :)
Absolutely fantastic shot. Well spotted. The only thing I wish is that the foreground flowers weren’t in shade – but really, that’s just a tiny quibble. The composition on this shot is spot on.
Wow. Great shots. 3 and 4 for me as well – how do you get such vivid, bright and shiny eyes? That’s what always sells these types of portrait shots for me.
