Hey Miki why put yourself down? It’s waste of time, plenty of other people will do it for you for free. ;0)

Looks great to me if you like pictures of old pumps. If I were to nitpick to my liking I’d crop the right side off pushing the pump more in that direction. I’m also very much interested in the text on the metal shaft. Something to play with maybe? Tweak your lemons and maybe up the saturation a few notches to give it a bit more ‘wet’?

Good man – always spying for the next shot!.

nice one mik. Colours look spot on to me for this time of year.

You’re always thinking of your next shot – fair play to ya.

To be honest, you probably haven’t been here enough to say whether
there’s a decline or not. No disrespect like.

Unless you think things have gone down hill since you joined??

Oh things went down hill WHEN I joined hehehe. Yeah yeah but they all have to up their game now.

Pete isn’t it all a reference to the current state of activity really? So here a week or a lifetime it’s anyone’s take on what the vibe is here. Contrary to people’s (snap judgement) opinion of me I’m not into running things down. I signed up to this site many years ago and easily drifted away again in favour for others. The athmosphere was then and is now for me flat. But that’s just to me. Unlike JB I don’t feel the need to complain about it openly, what purpose does that serve?
It’s like any social gathering, it suits you or it doesn’t. Put me at a world cup soccer final and I’ll probably spend the time looking at the architecture of the stadium, put me at any rugby game in any open park and I’ll be itching to get on to the field – and you’d be forgiven to think they’re the same thing. Forum against Forum.

Pete I like much of what you’ve written.
In particular on Irish run websites you’ll think and talk like we self righteously think or we’ll shout you down, a lot like that little catholic nun in school that used to threaten me with god’s wrath and all that. The Brothers just knocked, whipped and tore the b*l*x out of us, not much better but at least it’s not mental torture.
On Irish forums if we don’t act as the tosspot ops want us to we get banned. Free expression is not welcome. You may not give your opinion in your own way using your own words or phrasing because when on our internet site you must leave your Dublinese at the door and be a pretentious knob. Boards.ie is a clear example of such pathetic wastage. I can imagine Brendan Behan, Roddy Doyle, James Joyce and a few others getting the little D4 tossers that run the place and giving them a belt about the head for every f***ing asterix on their forum.

Then you mention SMS messaging and such communication – I agree with all of that to a large extent and you’re right to keep an eye on it but keep in mind what’s written and what’s read can be 2 different things also. A simple poke in the ribs can be taken as an insult, a bit like not getting the joke because you’re tired. “You twat” between mates is understood as playful, to a stranger it’s probably an offence. That example is probably obvious but other straight written factual text on forums the user must apply their own emotion to it, and where does that lead us? (Not wanting to start another thread on “how to critque” here)

But as for the free-speech concern… we’ll I’m still here aren’t I?! The boss was a bit concerned about it. I did have to explain myself away but sure I don’t care either way. It was all a great source of amusement. Oh and I can assure you, you were not at odds with everyone else, plenty agree with my straight talk ;0)

So why is the site flat? Well maybe it’s coz it’s a small knit community, we’re all stuck on this ransacked island in a dire depression. That’s got to spill over on to the vibe right? Maybe from this small community we have a limited view on photography or a limited range of subjects to excite the mind and we’ve seen them all? Maybe it’s peer pressure? oooh? We’ll we’ve seen how I stood on a few toes and if we want to stay palsywalsy then we don’t raise any dust? Or maybe it’s just JB posting misery onto the site whining on about how we’re all failing to amuse him enough lately and what’s in it for him these days? Didn’t someone else post “I’m bored” – Sell you’re ****** computer and buy a football!

It’s hardly the site’s fault so, it’s here to bring people together (unstiffled)… Get Creative! Start a project. Post something useful in the Site Suggestion’s box “Like Nossie for Ops!”

What I like about this site; it’s full of paddies. What I don’t like about this site; it’s got a fair share of pretentious knobs on it and people that want to give their opinion more than get an opinion. Ah well but “this is the internet and none of it matters”, unless you think a bit like Pete.

Now I really have to go, it’s getting close to drinking and roaring time and I have a lot to do still.

“It’s just a bleedin’ photograph!” I hear it all the time and I’m as hard as nails about it now. Or I love this one “some woman over there said they’re only a fiver” to which I reply “the pints are only 49 cents now see what the barman tells ya”. “I’m the bride’s god mother so I should get a discount”, ‘presumably so you can spend more on drink to piss away right?’

Don’t bother arguing other than to say “The price is €xx and that’s great value for what you’re getting”.

On the down side, my site started out as a digital sales site and I found it was a total flop. Paying to download digital goods just didn’t happen. Paying for prints does go over a lot better. Overall selling from a website is tough. If you can invest in more gear like a printer to make contact sheets or another screen for people to view their shots and then take cash on the day and post out prints later you might get a better twist out of it.

So my computer has been working fine for a number of months now and yesterday it bule screened on start up. So off I go on thw www on my trusty Mac and find the Acer site and look on their worldwide map. Ireland is not there

OK so you might say that Ireland is covered by the UK but then why not list us as such?
Countries such as Malta 402K popultaion, Estonia 1.3M, Slovena 2M, Lativa 2.3M, Lithuania 3.6M and Moldova 4.2M are all covered. Strange that ACER never heard of Ireland or am I the only idiot here that ever bought one of their computers? (Please don’t answer that)

Arrrhhh I hate this! And I hate it when they give coverage rights or reseller rights for Ireland to an UK company. All I can do is throw a pebble at them and ask the US companies how’s the weather in Canada?

For the blue screen, the software I trust to test for baddies is malwarebytes.org They have a free copy on their site but a man with your mattress could easily throw them a score.
For hardware fault finding I guess you know the drill?

This is going to sound like a sick reply, and I’ve considered not posting since it’s most likely that the gear won’t come around and people won’t get it but… Will you pay a couple of hundred to get it back even if it is to the **** that robbed it?
Also tell us where it was nicked from.

    f/4 + 1/640 +1600 !?

Are you in manual (and pulling the raw for 2 stops?)? Or is 1/640 what Av gave you?

I gave your tips page a once over. You say go for Tv, so what if the light isn’t there like the LvM match?

… I just delved deeper into your site. Fair play to ya for your informative effort there.

    Hi Paul.
How’d you get these shots? Obviously you have some kind of field pass right? coz I’m behind shaggy on that break.
Also what lens & settings do you go with?

I don’t usually go to games to shoot them so a few tips would be nice. I lost a tonne of shots during LvM due to lack of testing/experience/right gear. I ran a load of shots at iso640 and sadly a lot of lost action, later when it was black out I whacked it up to 1600 and scraped a few through at 1/100 wide open sometimes.

As I mentioned elsewhere I hate looking at a game through the lens but I’m kinda getting into it. The kid next to me got way better shots with my gear but he didn’t know how the focus lock works so he lost some fantastic body slam shots that he waited for.

Right well IFSC is private property open to the public so isn’t it theirs to say what’s ok and not ok? If you cross the road and shoot from by the liffey then you can tell them to peeoff.

As for the LUAS, hmmm?… Don’t the public own it? Ambiguas. Anyway as above, stay off the lines and do what you want.

Irish Rail are endearing and down to earth as always. Fair play to them.

What I find dopey about the whole thing is that on more than one occasion I’ve been asked by the police for the pictures to assist in trying to identify who was were and with whom. Including a recent high profile murder case. So if I wasn’t there taking pics then there’d be no evidence.

Soooo… I say, be nice to the Guards coz I know they want us to be nice to them, even when they have to ask you to leave against your will perhaps in a situation like the IFSC. What I’m saying is, if a Guard asks you to move and you don’t like it, do it anyway and don’t grumble, even apologise for giving him work, he might have no choice by law but to make you do it. However I think photogs staying on good terms with them is the greater way to go. The more good vibes the Guards get from us then the more they’ll align themselves with us. And hopefully overtime all this photog=terrorist bush sh1te will fade away.
