Redto – This is answer we expected, not answer how to charge for pro photography when you are pro as we all now well how much to charge and what to deliver to live from it.
I know she is familiar with schedule. Same as any person attending for a soccer game is familiar with game schedule, not everybody who is familiar with schedule have to deliver good photos , but if we have 2 photographers with “same ” skills , equipment etc and one is familiar other one not, we can suspect this one with knowing schedul can deliver better photos. Gerry answer please how much did you charge when somebody asked you for photos way before you set-up your business? did you went to bussines advisor than , did you look for professional advice? Why so many people advice to do it, advice to be so expansive , advice to complicate things?
I wrote it with full respect to quality of your commercial work Ashley and Gerry to your experience in business.
Ok . Can we just answer one simple question please.
How much every one of us, (we are in different levels, different speciality etc but we all did our first paid job )
charge when was first asked to do some photos to somebody else then ourselves. Before you register your business, before you start being professionals. How much you charged or was it for free?
Do not go to any professional association for advice do not pay any business advisor.
Nicola tell them €100 a day. Treat it as your practice . If you will get next job on photography you will know what is going and next time you will be more familiar with everything.
It was answer for question: How does client know what will get for price. As you asked.
It is first time somebody would like to charge for work, no point to complicated to much. Somebody is looking for simple help on very beginning stage, never done any paid work so my advice is not charge to much as before you start charging you have to be well prepared (insurance, backup, customer skills, accounting etc etc)
You don’t jump into photography with pricing anyway, You start, you learn, you understand build a portfolio, offer free work, get an understanding of your work, understand your style and eventually consider charging later on.
A photography business is NOT something you just jump in on and hope for the best. You need to understand settings and the technical side of the job and understand the ins and outs of lighting and understand your camera, understand business before anyone should be charging anything.. Knowledge first, business later.
I’m not sure all that terms and condition and complicated contracts are helpful on this stage.
Ashley it is well know problem with photography : how much charge and what is bad, good and very good, and there is no one simple answer.
We can simply price our work, like here:
If they asked somebody who is going to do it first time Paul they wont pay 900. If they would like to get pro they will hire you for example.
But other side is you will spent 20 hours plus editing +phone calls etc 20 hours, if you are begginer you have to get 10 euro /h. If it will be first time i will be hapy if i will get € 400.
Ps. all depands on your quality and how known you are in market if you good charge more if bad less, you can be bad and well established and charge more or much better, but just starting and have to charge less:Are you insured? are you registered? have back up equipment if something go wrong?
Are you enjoyable:)?
(. Some pople like black and white photos with red rose, some like art, compare to other, send email to other sport photographer with question, it is best way to know HOW MUCH.
Good luck
Do you know personaly any wedding photographer doing €108.000 a year now?
I just know if you are good in wedding photography bussines you can live from it, if not good, you can not (do not take it personally, as i do not know your photography profile)
and there are still people who are living from it- simple as this.
For me professional wedding photography is about business and creativity not art, passion, love> You can have passion, love and even art but if you can not sell it you have no money… and you have to “frying fish and chips” (this is what i have been doing when i come to Ireland: and i love it …. for while:)):))
Please note i’m talking not about photography general, it is about wedding photography.
Ps Gerry:
If i have a chance and you will have a time i really like to call in to your studio for coffee/pint to have a chat about photography:)
hope i will have another wedding near Galway:)
Gerry, I think it is your personal resarch and it is not matching current market. It is amazing what you did writing it but i think it is not up to date.
Get out from bottom of barrel:) leave them there. I know it is hard, as lots of photographers have own style and thing they are good, but they are just …same as they are 10 years ago, and they think they are happy what they did that couple years ago…it is best way to drown!
If you are photographer matching current market in wedding industry you can earn good money. So i wont turn out from it it is getting better and better for me every year… Even it is to busy, and i’m not on bottom on barrel:):)well i’m not on top either but who is:)?
be
Nice colours and it is great if it is your 1st wedding.Nice work. Maybe wee bit oversharpered, and more light needed on 1 st, 5th.
