I think the framing is fine in both, but these really would have been a lot more compelling with a bit of light in the sky. The black is pretty overwhelming and dominates both images. If you got a similar shot around dusk (whatever time that is), you’d get a bit of blue in the sky which would lift the picture no end.
Great shot Gary. I was there on Saturday morning at the same time, maybe a bit earlier, looking for the mist, but it wasn’t there (damn weather lady and her lies!). Looks like we stood in exactly the same place :-)
Dave – he wasn’t actually landing or taking off, he was hovering there doing his thing, that’s why I am so happy with the shot, because he was filtting from flower to flower and I was following him around the bush! I even had to climb into the paddling pool in my shoes to keep up with him :D , but he apparently liked this particular flower and hovered at it for 30 seconds or so. I actually would have expected to see some blurring in the wings, considering he was using them at the time
thanks for the comments. I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for to be honest. I was throwing the garlic out as it was in the fridge for a while and I thought it looked interesting…
Thanks Shutterbug, I think I agree with you on the wall – it does appear to be too ‘big’ in the picture. I might try a different crop with less pier and more sky. I’m not sure if that is actually distortion at the sides, but rather the two sides of the bay coming out towards the sea (IYKWIM?)
Yes, I will hopefully be renovating my house and there is a specific wall I havve in mind for this. It will be a long white wall. I was kind of hoping to use a large acrylic print to give the impression of having it as a kind of window and this is the view out (if you know what I mean)
I figured out what was bothering me about this – it’s the long wooden pole on the left. It’s blocking the view of the viaduct and also it’s splitting the image and leaving the boat on the left out in the cold.
The prcoessing and the composition are very good. Taken from the footbridge?
wirepic – you are right regarding the crop, I didn’t really notece it until I saw it on the white background
Regarding the processing – the first bridge was just a white balance and increase the black slider in lightroom. The second bridge pic is a crop and convert to B&W (standard LR preset I think). For the third one, the image was a bit soft, possibly due wind. With this I changed the white balance slightly and I set the clarity right down to -100 to give it a kind of dreamy look (and to obscure the fact that it was blurred  ). The last one is a pano of 9 or 10 shots, converted using the LR High contrast B&W preset. Ithink this one is going to look good as a huge perspex-mounted print to make it really glow.
This is really nice. It could almost be the NW coast of the USA with all its ruggedness. I think you could do something to bring up the sky a bit, make it more dramatic?
