Ugh – here goes the long and convoluted explanation…
Yes, I intended to upgrade my gear; initially, the plan was to change my 3 current lenses (well, 2 now that the 50’s sold) for the 17-55 (and a Sigma 70-300, but let’s not confuse the story any more!).
When I realised the other day that 5Ds were so cheap in New York (where my family will be next week), I thought it was an ideal opportunity to upgrade, as I’ve been watching my dad shoot with a 5D for the last year or so, and there’s only so long you can do that for without thinking about how much better life would be if you had one. So I edited my original post to add the 30D.
I spent the weekend gradually coming to the conclusion that getting a US 5D would be pretty silly, because of the warranty and servicing problems, so I changed my mind about that, but haven’t edited my original post yet to reflect that.
And no, I actually didn’t realise the 17-55 was EF-S until a couple of hours ago; it wasn’t an issue when I was keeping the 30D, and the whole 5D thing was impulsive and badly thought out, I just got carried away.
So there you have it: I’m cr*p at deciding things, but fundamentally honest ; )
And incidentally, now I think I might go for the Tamron 17-50 instead of the Canon 17-55 (I refer you to my previous post about being crap at deciding things).
As for the not knowing anything about me, it’s a fair point, and probably any equipment trading forum would fairly similar. It wasn’t so much that I had a problem with Brandywine wanting more information, it was the way he phrased the post. The ‘I always find it strange…’ bit could have been a straightforward ‘please could you tell us more about yourself, and maybe give us a link to a website’, which would have been far less confrontational. The comments questioning my choice of lens were unnecessary and irrelevant. I’m afraid there’s generally not much chance that I’ll respond well to a post like that first thing on a Monday morning!
So, about back to the point of the thread:
– the 50mm is sold.
– the 24-70mm is sale agreed, I’m just waiting for the cheque.
– the 17-40 is still available, and I can post pictures of it and taken with it if anyone is interested.
– the 30D is no longer for sale.
And about me:
– I live in Louth but work in Dublin so if anyone’s interested in the 17-40 I can meet up more or less anywhere in Leinster.
– I don’t have a website: I’m not a professional photographer and I only have a couple of shots I’d bother putting on the net!
– I’m not good with Mondays
(oh, and I am a bad, grumpy and suspicious person  )
The fact that it’s the internet doesn’t mean you should be rude; fair enough, it might be safer to assume the worst about people, but is it really necessary to say it? It’s a bit off-putting to be spoken to like that when, let’s face it, there was absolutely nothing in the thread to suggest that I wasn’t perfectly genuine.
So basically you’re saying that only people with a high post count and detailed profile will be treated with courtesy and assumed to be honest, while everyone else will be treated as a probable troll or scammer? Maybe you should have a sticky explaining that.
My first and only post is here because I usually post on a different photography forum, which isn’t ideal for selling gear on as it’s international.
I intend to replace the 24-70 and the 17-40 with the 17-55, which for me, combines the best of both lenses: the wider focal range of the 17-40, and the speed and IS of the 24-70. Plus it’s got IS and great IQ, and it’s light, which is something I need in a walkaround lens, as I find that the 24-70 makes my neck sore. Does that justify my intentions adequately, or should I bow to your superior knowledge of my photography needs and keep the lenses you think I should have?
The reason I haven’t filled in my profile is that I wan’t sure if I’d be spending much time posting here. I like the forum I use now; the posters are friendly, I like the sense of humour there, and they have a wedding photography forum, which I spend a lot of time in, so I wasn’t sure that this one would compete. Frankly, after reading your post, brandyman, I don’t see why I’d bother making more effort, in the face of such suspicion and rudeness.
