  • I would suggest if you have the cash hire a reputable model from the many forums, this girl is nothing short of amazing and gave it everything for the full day,a workshop is a great idea with fellow togs that are keen to shoot this medium and will lower the cost.I began practising with a dummy i found in a skip just the torso so i knew what lighting (low Key) setups i needed on the day and i saved a lot of faffing around.

Not to sure about the Elinchroms as im a bowens user and have used honeycomb grids with velcro on the front, this will direct your light source without much spill especially useful if you’re hi-key lighting as many octa’s & regular softboxes will bounce especially in a smaller working environment.Im surprised its still very bright at the lowest power you should still have some control especially for low key.

    Thanks Gerry
Sound advise will follow that up.

Some beautiful images there especially the preparation style & no 11 is stunning. Can i ask you are you using a 85mm with just natural light/reflectors or are you boucing flash as the quality is stunning. Thanks Ben

    1,2,3 beautiful,love the dress in the first & lighting.Nice work :)

A little bit harsh on that critique Noel, there is some worthy images there that im sure the groom to be would be delighted with especially the more interative shots of the walking along the beach with the vintage tone (12a) & 13.

The rest are really just let down due to some aspects such as the high sun in their faces causing heavy contrast shadows and harsh lighting, maybe somewhere with open shade along the beach(if any) and fill in flash would have helped,i often used to bring a big disc reflector to act as a scrim when in area i couldnt hide from the sun.

The reflector here to act as fill would have helped you enormously to open up those shadows.
I love the concept but maybe less is more. Yes the horizons are not straight but thats easily fixed. The flare in 8 is too severe by dropping your position & filling in with some fill would have solved this but the right hand image is sweet.

In 10 maybe a higher value aperature would have brought more detail back into her face as its quite shallow its making her features a little lost but the image overall is good.

    Hope this helps.

Yeah the first image was a a selective focus on spot so was only later i had noticed the flowers were soft possibly that she was also holding them out from her body however im actually glad vecause it draws you more into her face etc, used a 70-200 2.8 at Iso 200 taken late in October round 3pm so light was going down fast.

For the tone its a preset i made in lightroom just with some cross processing.

Didnt apply much sharpening as i prefer to see the pores these days so really just crop, small sharpen & then tone. All shot as J-Peg.

Very sorry to hear that mate, sounds like some very hard to come by equipment so may be more hard to sell onto industry professionals,i myself had all my gear stolen from the studio last year while i was actually in the same building, devastated doesnt cut it,gardai found them on CCTV but the gear was moved on so quick & out of the country.

Thanks John, here is one more eye direction on.

Thanks for your advice Gerry,v.much appreciated. Whats does give me some hope is i do know of some new guys starting out again working from home & they have built a strong online presence without the need of an actual studio so pretty much work from an office, however as you quite rightly said if i decided to move the biggest fear is that people think i may have gone out of business and think the worst and not pick up the phone or visit the website etc.

What my heart thinks & what my account says are two very different things lol :)
    Thanks Ben

Hi Gerry,i have seen this online and i think its the way to go especially when at events & out of studio and needing to make transactions, however im wondering how customers feel about this device attached to your phone taking their card details, they are dubious enough as it is,just wondering has anybody tried it out in the field so to speak.

    Thanks Miki
Yeah i was thinkin that but i’d say its mostly people/portrait stuff so anything less than 30/40th of a sec with Is lens at max Iso is my limitations, here’s a guy who’s work ive admired for a while and he seems to get that look down to a tee http://www.sharpshock.com

    Thanks for the heads up
    Ben
