I like the black and white conversion on this and I think the subject is interesting however has clami said the perspective could be better, in terms of composition I’d compose it differently too, the main subject is too small in my opinion. I would like to see him closer to the lens or with his full body in frame. That’s just my personal opinion and taste though.
For a first post this is a pretty solid effort in all aspects.
Great first attempt. I like the way you composed the shot starting at the top left and finishing at the bottom right, creates a nice depth and flow.
I’d just straighten the horizon line because it seems a good bit crooked.
With the winds we’ve had recently I’m not even sure if a mountain would be steady so the tripod did well. Another trick is get a plastic bag with stones and hang it of the tripod.
I quite like the second image. To get a really good action shot you’d (at least I would) normally take a good few shots. The second shot seems pretty well composed but there are a couple of things I’d try to do differently. I’d use a long lens and/or separate the model a little more from the foliage to create depth of field. The focus also seems a teeny bit off to me.
The first shot seems like you’ve underexposed significantly and then tried to rescue it on selected areas and applied saturation, it seems too much to me. You might want to try to bring the whole image back a little in camera raw and then work less on the areas you want to give more emphasis to.
I agree with you that I’d rather not have the lady there, I have another crop with more floor which I now think I prefer to this one because it places the main subject centered and one reflection above and below. I’m on the fence with this though.
Just to add my 5 cents to the discussion, now that I’m a full time professional (it is my sole income after all) I sometimes tend to value more the opinions of people that know a little or sometimes nothing at all about photography or composition than some photographers.
I explain…
Some photographers get stuck with the rules, I’m guilty of it myself at times. Sometimes I find my mind drifting to thirds, ratios, spirals, etc… but sometimes image that break all the rules work just as well as those who follow them all.
Photography (for me) is a conjunction of several factors and composition is just one of them. Subject, light, environment, mood, colour all play a role in how appealing an image is.
Then you have the whole discussion of beauty is in the eye of the beholder which I’ll leave for later. :-)
Thanks for all your comments guys.
PS: Ohh I guess this was just to say to Peter not to refrain to comment or critique any of my pictures, I value everyone’s opinion so long as it is constructive. It is the only way I can grow is if you give me your honest opinions.
