thanks for the comments, I did like the yellow against the blue and I agree, the leaf in the middle was distracting, was very tempted to pull it off  but decided against damaging the lovely plants for the sake of a photo.
Thanks for the feedback all :) I have been to other parts of Nebraska before and saw a few photo opportunities but unfortunately didn’t have my camera at the time. I brought it this time hoping to get some interesting mid western hick town photos like in the link you posted saoirse but unfortunately just couldn’t get my head into it. Ah well, I’m sure I’ll be going back again at some stage and may be better prepared to ‘see’ some shots. I think I’ll put this trip down as not very productive and get some ideas for next time.
Thanks for the lovely feedback :D well its submitted tonight for my camera clubs monthly competition so hopefully the judge will give as positive feedback as I’ve gotten here.
Well done Kev, lovely shots. No. 2 and 3 are great. Its a beautiful spot at that time in the morning. Not sure theres much you can do about that dark area in the left, maybe as was suggested before, a trip up there around mid summer when the sun is in a slightly different position would help.
Johnson76, if you go out there and park in the upper lake car park its literally around the corner, 2 minutes you cant miss it just follow the signs for the upper lake from the car park.
May be worth a trip back next mid-summer so and try and lift the shadows a bit. Unfortunately pretty much all the detail is lost in the shadow part so even a bit of dodging doesn’t really help, I tried adjusting the raw file to create 2 images one correctly exposed for the rest of the scene and one grossly over exposed to bring up the shadow part and merge the 2 in photoshop but even on the raw file, although it does contain some detail its of such bad quality it would look a bit rubbish slotted in. But hey, can always try again next year and even with the shadow I’m pretty happy with the shot. :D
great shots Rog! I know what you mean about Nebraska not being a tourist destination, unfortunately I have to go occasionally with work, but I never saw many good photo opportunities. I’m going back in a couple of weeks though so will keep an eye out. Can you let me know where this is in Nebraska? might see if I can take in a bull ride while I’m over there. I’ll be in Columbus if you’ve any recommendations.
love those sun beams :D have seen them a lot recently and each time either in some spot thats pretty useless for photos or without my camera. Must be getting into sun beam time of year. well captured

Its the upper lake at around 9am. I’m wondering if the shadow might be slightly less if you get there a little earlier but I know that spot gets more and more in shadow throughout the day until most of that valley is in shade. Its a pity but hey, good luck on saturday going up, once it goes past around 9.30 or so the lake starts to ripple again so get there nice and early to get the glass effect before the breeze picks up.
Some fluffy clouds would have been perfect, I was hoping for some, it looked promising at around 8am but then they dissappeared with the fog. Got up at 5am to photograph the sunrise in dunlaoghaire but unfortunately it didn’t happen so this was an afterthought.
Tried it again with the auto levels and a little tinker with the saturation and it looks much better. Thanks a million all for the tips and comments, will give it another go in the middle of the day. Roll on the day when I can afford a new camera and get this one converted 8) I definately like IR and could probably get a better exposure earlier in the day. The shutter speed for this was around the 30 second mark I think, at ISO400 with aperture wide open. Hot spots weren’t too bad and could be generally dealt with in PS, so nice to know it works anyway with a 20D, someone else had told me it probably wouldn’t and hotspot would be to bad with this camera but so far so good. :D
Thanks for the feedback all, I was a bit dark alright, thought it might be more effective earlier in the day, It looks much better with your edit nfl-fan, I’ll try again and mess about with the levels and saturation, didn’t do much with them at all if anything in the original doh! don’t know why I didn’t think to adjust the saturation after the channel mixer. Hope its a sunny day this weekend for attempt 2. :D
lovely textures, I prefer the black and whites and agree the square crop suits it better. I wonder if it might add to the composition a bit if the the camera was tilted a bit to create a lead in line from the bottom left corner of the frame with the crack. Just my opinion though :D
Thanks for the comment justaguy, but I kinda like the space around it, was trying to get a pattern through from another pic of some lichen covered rocks to just come through the sand and make it a bit more interesting and arty farty. but a close up of shells with them filling the frame would be nice also.
