Two nice images, and hard to choose between them but I prefer the 2nd one only on account of the sun peering out over the island. If you had taken it from Balscadden, I wonder would you get a shaft of sunlight running across the sea to reach the shilouette of the island? Anyway, two fine pictures they already are!
Terrific sky you got there.
Show’s us that sometimes you an fire straight into the sun and get lots of great detail anyway.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the barrel distortion. A little curvature of the horizon seems quite natural
But I would be concerned that the whole image seems to be out of focus or very soft.
This might have happened during the resizing for the web.
You should check that. Always sharpen your images after making them so small.
Thanks indeed for your kind comment.
In fact the horizon did annoy me too, and to my eye it looks better now it’s adjusted a little.
The focus point is on one of the clouds which might account for the perception of softness.
My workplace overlooks this scene and they’ve offered to enlarge and hang a print.
Not sure how it will look, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Thanks again for the feedback and critique.
Barrel distortion is when the shot has a slight “curved look” to it.
It’s noticable on the horizon of shots such as yours where the horizon is slightly curved,
Certain lenses seem to cause it more then others(don’t ask me why).
If you are using Photoshop it’s Filter >Distort >Lens Correction, in here you should see a slider for “Remove Distortion”.
Hope this helps.
Thank you again.
I found this also: http://www.gilsmethod.com/how-to-correct-barrel-distortion-in-photoshop” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;, which I think is for CS3 users
I’ve got Elements 4 which only has a tool for straightening images but it’s improved the horizon.
Elements 5 and onwards has the more sophisticated tool.
Appreciate your help.
Regards, Mike.
I like the highlights on the third, for me that one stands out as the best.
Two is a nice composition, but perhaps a little too dark: it works as an abstract if that’s what you were going for.
The rest are nice, not bad at all, but to my eye they seem to lack a certain ‘energy’. Apart from number three, they all seem to lack drama.
Photos aren’t ‘mysterious’ just because the girly bits are darkened or in shadow.
Generally, the figure looks a little too ‘posed’, static, and uncomfortable.
She looks a little tense. I would have liked the figure be more fluid and free flowing.
Don’t try to ‘force’ the work, wait for the image to emerge from the interplay of energies and creativity in the session.
Build up relationships with models, the more you practice the easier it will get.
Great to see a photo without snow in it. :D I like this. It’s a nice relaxing scene. The colours and reflections are nice. I just feel the branch on the far right is sort of intruding somehow though.
Thanks for the comment Miki, yes, no snow … and taken back in the time when there was plenty of water in the country too.
