We had a professional Potrait photographer at our camera club a few weeks ago and he had a selection of 20″ prints taken with a 6MP camera. True, its was a SLR and the noise was imperceptable, but it was still only 6MP and the prints were fantastic.
As one of the other posters noted, the defraction through the smaller lens on a compact camera will have a greater limiting effect than a few extra Mega Pixels or lack thereoff.
It is also worth noting that doubling the MP count does not give you twice the resolution. To double the resolution you need four times the number of pixels.
Thank you for that Wheeles. I’ve decided on a Canon A550 Digital with 7.1mp & 4+ optical zoom. I wanted to balance out the compactness of the camera with higher pixels & zoom level than the camera I’ve got.
that’s exactly what I was asking about.
I guess I will study your instructions for a few weeks and then try it out myself…

A simpler way to transfer an image (or part of an image), is to set up the two images side by side (and of equal size) on the PSP screen. Then using your clone tool (set to a large Brush size), click on the image you want to transfer from and then with the clone brush on the receiving image start l/clicking as you move over the image. Nb. this way of doing it requires getting the location on the pic right, also the right size. Try it on an image of a person and clone someones head onto the other image and see how it works. Happy cloning
Peter, I have no problems with that. If it’s ok with Spinman.
I guess my main problem is that I am not aware of how to do some of the more basic things (in PS as well as PSP).
For example, I really need to find out more about working with masks.
I really liked Ross’/Brandyman’s tutorial on merging two exposures and I can’t figure out to do the same in PSP.
What I need to figure out how to apply a graduate mask in Paint Shop.
Hi Madra Rua,
Your query (ie.Masks & merging) covers an area requiring a long imput or tutorial. However, Masks are basically layers that you can create for special effects or to blank out surrounding details to the main image. A simple way to merge an image or part of an image with another image is to promote both images onto the the desktop alongside each other. (ie the image that will receive and the image that will give). click on the image you want to extract the part for merging and using the freehand selection tool outline the image you want to merge into the other pic. NB. make sure the the scrolling lines at the start and beginning join up and are unbroken. R/click on the selection area and click on copy. Promote the receiving image to the front, then r/click on it selecting paste. Important note. When you click on paste you get a drop down selection from which you choose paste selection This will place the image onto the receiving image where, keeping the left button on the mouse down will allow you to place the image to where you want it. Click on layers and choose merge… flatten to merge both pics. I usually use the clone tool to merge the edges around the insert. I hope thats helpful, as I’m no expert myself on all of PSP and am still learning. PS try and use the help section which should give you step-by-step instructions. Good luck.
Thanks to all, (Steve, Thorsten, Allinthemind and any others), for advice on my query. Any good sites that can provide that sort of info?
I am looking at a Samsung S850 with 8mp & 5 optical zoom. It has image stabilisation including advanced shake reduction, with ISO up to 1600 for low light work. What’s your opinion on this package?
Obviously many of you are using Photoshop to twiddle with your photos – it being the industry standard and all.
But I was wondering if there are any other users of Paint Shop Pro on this forum and if so, what your experiences are?
I was hoping I might even be able to learn a thing or two.
I use Paint Shop Pro 9 and find it quite good in editing my photos. I tried Photoshop but could’nt get on with it. I’m not expert on it but if I can help I will. Contact me by private message with any queries.

Hear is a photo of my country :) ? Madeira it?s a little island full of traditions, great landscapes and festivities? you have plenty to explore!! I see you played with the composition on this one. :)
Hi Erin,
Yes, I cropped the image to remove other elements so as not to detract from the Rock & Boat. I brightened up the image and done some minor editing for transferring the image to canvas. spinman
This type of pictures are not about the subjects but feelings. I know that it does not work for lot of photographers but I have good response from artists and some public.
Sorry Roberto, but I think it is awful. Please stick to your normal photos and don’t turn into one of those artists whom you mention. They tend to talk a lot about some awful piece of work which they have produced, in order to make it seem more than it is.
A piece of work, whether in the purist form of photography, or an edited pic using software to recreate an image to an individual’s taste can never be regarded as ‘awful. What is produced is an artform (and photography is itself an artform), that appeals to the creator. It may not be to everybody’s taste, but it must be respected as the artform it is, whether or not it has any appeal to the person viewing the pic.
