Thanks for your help, there was no refund given, this has been an eye opener and important learning experience for me, I will take my new found skill and will in future be turning down customers if anything about concerns me, that gut feeling/instinct, I will be listening to it’s advice from now on and actually have already turned down a sure customer because she failed to pay down a deposit over the course of 4 months leading up to an event, rang me a week before the date wanting to know was I still available, told her no, someone had booked me and paid a deposit to secure, even though it wasn’t the case, I figured if she was this bad about paying the deposit then what would it be like come time to pay the remaining, larger sum.

I offer a wedding package. Package with album is an optional extra, I find that those who want an album won’t beat around the bush about it, those who don’t want an album won’t even mention it. I try to sell the album to them once they have me booked but I don’t push my luck with people’s patience either, there’s too many people at this game and competition is only a Google click away.

Nothing wrong with doing an online course, just know that the Internet is free and contains many good and solid tutorials and advice.

My advice would be to buy a camera with the ability to change lenses. Therefore you’re not limiting yourself to one fixed lens, also, wireless connection ability is great, you can take a photo and transfer it for editing and /or posting to a website / social media in super fast time, I won’t recommend any particular brand of camera but having a list of what requirements you need and expect of your camera is a great way of selecting your new camera, whether it be online, reading the specs and reviews of cameras or at your local Photography supply store. If you haven’t already acquired your new camera then good luck hunting and if you have then maybe you can let us know what you got and how you’re finding it.

“pro” is nowdays a term used in a lot of different ways.. so this is where i am at..

am i a “pro”? … possibly not or at least not yet.. however i do charge my customers for my services hence why i am replying..
what do i do? studio portraits focusing on newborns and children (80%) Commercial work (20%).

How many here use signed contracts with their clients?
    * commercial clients will have a quote with all the info before the shoot. licence agreement for usage once i deliver the images.
    * portraits session, i’m getting around to provide a contract before the shoot commence to be signed ahead of session.

Do you insist on getting paid before any photos are taken or do you invoice your clients?
*no. commercial work paid on delivery when lucky, at times they want a 30 days invoice.
portrait.. session paid on day of shoot. extras paid on collection.

How many of you guys print your own proofs for clients? Be it portraits or wedding photography, and how many of you use professional printing services for same?
    *digital proofs, lab for printing.

Thanks for the reply, it’s a great help :)

My budget . . . hmm, around the €500 mark i suppose, i have my eye on these 2 at the moment but i can’t decide which one to go for, their both Nikons but one (the older model), comes with 2 lenses and is only slightly more expensive than the more modern one, as the lens is almost everything in photography, is this a no brainer decision in your opinion?

    Thanks for the pointers :D

I’m strongly considering the Nikon D3200 as my first DSLR but if a used, higher end model could be got for similar price then i would also consider that, its image quality that i am mostly going for.

Thank you all for the replies and good advice, yes i will get to work on completing a course, it will be online though as i don’t really have the spare time to do night courses, i’m considering joining a club alright, i bet that there’s vast knowledge to be gained from speaking with like minded people and watching how they work, good advice all round :D i’m def. going to consider the used market for my next camera, thanks all :D
