Thanks steelydan! :) The umbrella worked very well with this sort of subject so I stuck with that the whole way through. A bare flash gave harsh shadows which I wasn’t looking for.
The strobist info is on my flickr btw (see signature). I was meaning to take a shot of the set ups but I had it all packed up when I remembered  but like I said the info is on my flickr.
You should definately get back to it! This is literally the first time I’ve used a speedlite before (never mind manually) so I wanted a simple subject. I’m finding myself slow working around the kit though – tweaking this and moving that, but I guess that will come in time.
Now all I need is velcro, gaffer tape, more (rechargeable) batteries and a cardboard box :D

at least you don’t ride on the black stuff ;)
4inch sounds good for xc. Skills will come with practise..

    Like the US rangers say:
‘slow is smooth and smooth is fast’

And thats exactly how it usually goes (most of the time) :)

Thanks jess. This is a whip -were you get the tail out, keeping your front wheel pretty straight. My picture doesn’t show it at all. That was the first time he was on that jump so he wasn’t fully used to it.. so you ride xc then? I’d be of the DH variety :-)
That jump isn’t really that big btw.. the gaps only about 8ft. I’ve jumped 11 but the DH fellas on big bikes can get up to 25+ ft

Yea I wasn’t to pleased with the perspective on that one, I just liked it because david (monty) didn’t know I took it so he was very natural.

    Thanks anyway! :)

the video isn’t directed at image editing/design but it could do it. Its currently available to casinos/cafes/big businesses from microsoft afaik and eventually it will be cheap enough for mortals like us to use too :-)

yea, that would be the little white button.
With the film camera connected both test buttons work.
With the 20d neither buttons will fire the flash, the camera recognises there is something in the shoe because it wont let the pop-up flash come up but the pulse given out must be that weak that the transmitter cant pick it up :(
There was a guy from a printer came yesterday to show my dad some samples for the new business cards and he had his camera kit with him (including a flash) I just didn’t think of asking him at the time  we’re getting the cards printed pretty soon so I might get another chance. But other than that I know no-one who has any big or small strobes I can borrow/test except loyd toal- my local pro :?

    lol, join the club! :)

afaik it doesn’t have a power adjust feature or require a master ETTL flash. I think it just fires with a fixed power and lets your distance/apeture control the amount of light that reaches the sensor.. I’m prob wrong though. The head of the wired transmitter has 3 distance settings on the top with a switch that you can use to change between them (see picture):

You then just choose your iso and set your apeture to what it says it should be (well thats what I think its for)
There is a hole on the front with what seems to be a light meter inside. Maybe thats what it uses to adjust its power in ‘auto’ mode. There is a manual mode but no switch/knob to manually adjust power.. but thats still no good if I cant fire it in
    the first place!
this is the back of the head:

No there isn’t an IR feature on the 20d.

I have enough money in the debit card now to buy the strobist kit but I don’t want to buy them and find when they arrive that I cant use them!!

Would it have anything to do with canon’s EOS cameras being reversed polarity? I don’t really understand it but I heard it on other articles/forums. :?

    thanks BP!
When I got the 20d it had no signs of use at all so the only use its got would be me taking the transmitter on and off a max of about 6 times so that sort of rules out cause 1 and 3.
This reversed polarity thing is a bit worrying though, would it be my cameras hot shoe or the transmitter thats wired wrongly?

I use the roof of the porch of my house :)

I see what you mean about the context of the shot, I might try it in potrait next time with more images.. I’ve wanted to go for a hike with the camera for some time now so I might try it in a mountainout landscape next time.

toned as in how many colours? Are tonal grads allowed?
You wouldn’t have the exif data on the 3 images mark? I just need exposure, apeture and iso for PS’s Merge to HDR command

    EDIT:
    my attempt:

(Its alright now Mark, Ps didn’t give me what I was looking for that well so I just did it the old fashioned way, masking and d+b :) )

Really good entries this time (maybe it’s because I’m not in it :D ).
The best thing to do is put them all into separate tabs (in IE or firefox) so you can filter through them all in full size.. takes a few clicks more but at least you get a non-biased POV on the set.

Don’t get me wrong, It’s great nonetheless!
