Considering the effort you put into getting it, it turned out extremely well. How close were you to the edge of the frame of the shot when you were lighting the foreground?

Very close, I had the phone in my left hand while holding the shutter with my right. so the light is coming from just behind and above the camera.

have you consider 3stop soft nd grad cokin filer? that would hold back the highlights in the sky and give you more light in the foreground

Thanks for the reply! Yes I have considered it, it would most definitely make a big difference. Unfortunately the my filter collection at the moment consists of one fader nd filter. Which only fits my old 18-55 kit lens …

I would love to start building up my collection soon, the financial strappings of student life are all that’s holding me back. Filters really very usefull, and fun to experiment with I would imagine.

Thanks for the reply’s folks, square crop seems to be the way to go.

The first is not for me personally.. in fairness it is very hard to do much with a subject such as this from this distance, for me it just doesn’t have any obvious mood or focal point.

The second is brilliant! I really like the composition, really leads your eye though the picture, full of energy and life. Must visit Donegal soon, seems like a great place for landscape.

A square crop just above the peak looks good!

Not a bad idea.. gets rid of the sky anyhow!

Thanks for the reply’s. I just had a look at the raw and the sky isn’t burned out so it went wrong somewhere in the editing. Think I’ll do a sky replacement the manual way anyhow… go back when there is better light! The sky and generally lack of interesting light is letting the image down no doubt about it, on the right track though!

Thanks for the feedback… an informed guess green meanie! 30 sec exposure.. f4. Would have experimented with a longer exposure and smaller aperture but my remote realise decided it had enough. I’d love to go back here sometime and attempt some star trails.

Hi, definitely not bad for a first HDR . Generally I don’t like HDR but this one is not too OTT, it is a tad over-saturated imo though. From the point of view of composition I think the focal point (glass house) is too centred, i think it would add to the dynamics of the image if the shot was taken from lower down, slightly to the right, and in portrait format.

The reason I think portrait format would work better is you could include some more of the steps and rails in the foreground, and also cut out the distracting sky in right top corner. This foreground detail would help to draw the eye in to the focal point more naturally, balance the image better and allow it to breath. Overall your on the right path though!

    Hi Tony,

I also own the mark 1 version. Picked it up for 350 second hand in perfect nick (might be worth looking for a second hand one yourself). I agree with Steve, this lens is not really fast enough for indoor low light esp zoomed in, but with high iso you might get respectable results.

I purchased this lens recently and so far I’m very pleased, its sharp and contrasty.. a definite upgrade from the 18-55 kit lens if that is what you own, the difference in sharpness at 18mm is quite noticeable, I was surprised and pleased. The vr if very effective, but only for static subjects of course.

I found the build quality to be acceptable if not remarkable, with the focus ring feeling under-damped, but this is a second hand lens that said. Overall feels solid and like it will last. I’d defiantly recommend it for a general lens.. but not low light indoor!

Cheers lads, its good to get some feedback to spur you on!

Thank you all for the welcomes and comments! I never stop taking photos so there will surely be more indeed.

Finding it hard to fault this image! The comp and light are v good, and the quality of that lee filter shines through.. beats the hell out of my cheap ebay version, time to save!
